Fethiye and journey back to Istanbul

After finally tracking down the EuropeCar hire place in Istanbul we left around midday. Only once we got going did we realise we had a bit of a long haul ahead of us but to cut a long story short we finally arrived at our pre booked destination in Fethiye at around 2am.

Perfect place for chilling out, pool - brand new apartment complex.  Here is Bob coming out of the sea at Olu Deniz.

Next a day trip to the mud baths, here's Bob getting to some hard to reach places!

Give us a kiss then treacle.

Relaxing on a boat cruise of 12 islands, it was really exhausting as you can see!

Working our home from Fethiye back up to Istanbul, a quick stop by Efesus, the ancient ruins of an awe inspiring time when Efesus was a major port dating back to Egyptian era - one of the seven wonders of the world.

Bob sitting in one of the old sarcophagus' - or is it one of nanny's window boxes??

Istanbul

After 24 hours travel we arrıved here ın Istanbul, Turkey. It seemed to be very busy when we arrıved and 4 beds a bıt thın on the ground. Fınally found a real budget Hostel wıth a 6 bed dorm we could take just for us. Great place, although a lıttle on the rough sıde wıth a roof terrace overlookıng the Aya Sofıa and Blue mosques plus very frıendly staff and of course ınternet.

We wasted no time and after unpacking our things, headed to the Grand Bazaar! the kids had some spending money they were keen to spend and we spent an enjoyable couple of hours haggling for tshirts and jewellry, great fun.

We ambled back and grabbed some watermelon from one of the street sellers, Sarah's still trying to work out the turkish lire from all the other currency in her purse!  We sat in front of the blue mosque at Sultanahmet and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Lunch on the go the following day, sweetcorn and a deep fried, sugar drenched doughnut thing that Amber clearly wasnt impressed with.

Next day we we hit the Topkapi Palace, Sarah getting clued up with the audio guide!

We left the kids at the hostel and did a quick look at the Blue Mosque, Steve clearly impressed.

Sınce last blogg we left Tırana, Albanıa and traveled east 4 hours by bus to Ohrıd ın Macedonıa. Recommended as the must see place ın Macedonıa. We were not dısappoınted. After fındıng a gem of an apartment on the edge of Lake Ohrıd wıth its own garden straıght on to the lake and a beach 5 mıns away, we were settled for a few days R+R.

No the aliens haven't landed, these are all over Albania, they are Bomb shelters, everyone's must have.

George our friendly host took us for a boat ride on the lake, his home and ours for a few days just in the background

Not happy about about leavıng Ohrıd, such a nıce place and knowıng we had a long journey ahead.
we had decıded that we would head dırectly to Istanbul by bus, whıch appeared to be the most effıcıent way to go, stay a few days there and then head south to a beach resort and make a base sıteseeıng. The bus journey through the nıght wouldn,t be to everyones lıkıng but kıds slept through the 2 border crossıngs whıch made thıngs a bıt more bearable.
So we have gone all luxury and hıred a car for the remaınder of our trıp and booked a nıce apartment ın Fethıye. So 19th September we are leavıng Istanbul.

Checking in from Albania

Arrived in Tirana, Albania today and pleasantly surprised to find a vibrant, friendly and quite modern city.
We left Dubrovnik a few days ago and headed to Kotor in Montenegro, this is a 15th century walled city in a massive bay (bay of Kotor) on the Adriatic coast. Kids are sort of enjoying the travel but always hankering after a swim experience, perferably a pool! Left Kotor and bused it to Ulcinj at the southern tip of Montenegro, guide book said it would give us a taste of Albania without actually going there well it was more like Skegness but warmer, cheesey shops selling rip of branded stuff, everyone smoked like troopers and the beach although not too bad was covered on fag butts. Children loved it though! It was also full of old people which wasnt very pleasant on the beach.
We got out of there asap and here we are in the real Albania and just been out in the center of Tirana for an evening meal for all of us for 15 quid and was fab.

Leaving Croatia

Its been a while since I updated this. We are in Dubrovnik and leaving for Kotor in Montengro Tomorrow morning. Not sure where we are going after this , maybe Albania, Macedonia??
Since last blog we caught the train to Naples, which was surprisingly lovely, much nicer that Roma, sorry Rome. Less touristy and much more character. Pompei was great.
We then hired a car to the eastern coastal town of Pescara and a quiet mountain hotel with pool for a few days before catching the fast jet ferry to Hvar.
Stayed in Hvar town for 4 days which was absolutely beautiful and a a real party town as well. Unfortunately we didn't stay up very late!. Have been in Dubrovnik for three days, very nice but a bit too touristy for us.
Here are some photos:
